Australia and India strengthen bonds on shared National Day

Canberra, January 26 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton extended their warm wishes to India and the Indian diaspora on the occasion of India’s 75th Republic Day, highlighting the deepening ties between the two nations.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Republic Day as a time to celebrate India’s achievements and rich cultural heritage, recognizing its remarkable progress since gaining independence in 1947. He emphasized the shared significance of January 26, which coincides with Australia Day, reinforcing the strong connections between the two democracies.
“Australia and India have never been closer, and our friendship continues to grow,” he stated, praising Indian Australians as the “lifeblood” of the bilateral relationship. He acknowledged their significant contributions in fields such as business, science, culture, sport, and the arts, expressing confidence in greater collaboration between the two nations in the future.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also highlighted the historical importance of January 26 for both countries. He recalled that Australia Day was first celebrated in New South Wales in 1838, marking 50 years since British settlement, while India’s Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, establishing the country as a sovereign republic.
Dutton recognized the dual significance of the date for Australians of Indian heritage, reflecting on long-standing ties between Australia and India, which began with the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 and have since strengthened over the decades. He commended Indian Australians for their contributions in various fields, emphasizing the shared democratic values, friendship, and enterprise that continue to bring the two nations closer.
Both leaders conveyed their best wishes to the Indian Australian community and the broader Indian diaspora, reaffirming the strong and enduring partnership between Australia and India.
