Australia and India strengthen cooperation in critical minerals and rare earths

MELBOURNE, OCTOBER 30/INDIAN ABROAD NEWSDESK

Australia and India are exploring opportunities to expand cooperation in critical minerals, rare earths, mining technology and research, with India’s Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, holding discussions with Australian government representatives, industry leaders and research institutions during his visit to Melbourne.

Reddy attended a strategic roundtable at Monash University on October 29, 2026, focusing on strengthening Australia-India collaboration in critical minerals, mining innovation, sustainable resource development, joint research and capacity building. During the visit, he also toured the university’s research facilities to gain insights into its advanced research capabilities and technological developments.

The discussions highlighted opportunities to deepen academic and industry partnerships, encourage knowledge exchange and promote innovation in the mining and resources sector.

On the sidelines of the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) 2026, Reddy also co-chaired the Australia-India Critical Minerals and Rare Earths Roundtable with Australian Assistant Minister for Resources, Senator the Hon. Anthony Chisholm.

The discussions focused on expanding investment opportunities, promoting technology collaboration, strengthening mineral exploration and processing capabilities, and developing reliable and sustainable supply chains for critical minerals and rare earths.

Both sides explored areas of mutual interest in the mining and resources sector, with an emphasis on creating opportunities for long-term cooperation and supporting resilient mineral supply chains.

As part of his industry engagement, Reddy interacted with representatives of several leading Australian mining and resources companies, including BHP, Bravus, Metso, Core Resources and High Titanium Resources and Technology Ltd. He invited greater participation, investment and collaboration from Australian companies in India’s expanding mining and minerals sector.

The Minister also visited exhibition stalls, including that of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he interacted with delegates on emerging opportunities in critical minerals, advanced mining technologies, research and innovation.

Critical minerals and rare earth elements are increasingly important to clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, battery manufacturing and advanced industries. Australia’s mineral resources, mining expertise and research capabilities offer opportunities for closer engagement with India’s growing requirements in these areas.

The series of meetings and interactions at IMARC 2026 and Monash University highlighted the scope for Australia and India to strengthen their strategic partnership through investment, technological cooperation, research collaboration and sustainable development of the mining and resources sector.
