Australia rejects 40% of Indian student visas amid policy tightening

Stricter rules and risk reclassification impact Indian students in 2026

Canberra, April 12 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)

Australia has significantly tightened its student visa policies in 2026, with nearly 40 per cent of Indian student visa applications being rejected, according to recent reports and official data. The move marks one of the sharpest increases in refusal rates in recent years and reflects a broader shift in Australia’s immigration and education policies.

Recent figures indicate that the rejection rate for Indian applicants reached around 40 per cent in early 2026, placing India among the most affected countries alongside Nepal and Bangladesh. The tightening of visa approvals comes after Australia moved India into a higher-risk category under its Simplified Student Visa Framework, leading to stricter scrutiny of applications.

Under the revised framework, Indian students are now required to provide more detailed financial documentation, academic credentials, and proof of genuine study intent. Authorities have stated that these measures are aimed at maintaining the integrity of the international education system and ensuring that visa pathways are not misused.

The overall refusal rate for international students has also risen sharply, with about one in three applications being rejected in February 2026—the highest level recorded in over two decades.

This has had a particularly strong impact on South Asian applicants, while students from countries like China continue to face significantly lower rejection rates. According to reports, the crackdown is part of Australia’s broader efforts to control migration levels and address domestic concerns such as housing pressures and the quality of student inflows.

However, the move has raised concerns among education providers and stakeholders, who fear it could affect international enrolments and strain academic ties between India and Australia. India remains one of the largest sources of international students for Australia, making the policy shift particularly significant for bilateral relations in the education sector.

Experts suggest that the stricter visa environment may lead many Indian students to explore alternative destinations such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and European countries. The development highlights a changing landscape in global student mobility, with Australia adopting a more cautious approach while balancing immigration control with its role as a leading education destination.
