Patna, Aug 4 (IANS) Following Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor’s decisive victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, leaders from both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Opposition parties reacted on Tuesday, offering differing interpretations of the result. While NDA leaders described the outcome as part of the natural cycle of electoral politics and called for introspection, Opposition leaders said the verdict reflected the growing public mood against the government.
Prashant Kishor secured a significant win in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of 18,963 votes and ending the BJP’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
According to the Election Commission, after the completion of all 31 rounds of counting, Kishor received 63,203 votes, while BJP’s Neeraj Kumar Sinha secured 44,250 votes.
Reacting to the result, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said that victories and defeats are an integral part of democracy and should be accepted in the right spirit.
“There are always wins and losses in elections. In the by-elections where we emerged victorious, we never claimed that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) had been tampered with. Election outcomes can be influenced by issue-based politics, caste equations, or anti-incumbency sentiments. All these factors must be accepted. The NDA will also undertake a self-assessment to identify any shortcomings,” Shaina NC told IANS.
Bihar Minister Ramkripal Yadav acknowledged Kishor’s political strategy and credited him for effectively connecting with voters.
“Prashant Kishor has certainly pulled off a masterstroke and played the game well. He has generated significant hope among the people of Bankipur. I believe that leaders should deliver on the promises they make. However, his statements have changed over time. Earlier, he spoke about bringing development to Bihar on the lines of Bengaluru, but now his position appears different,” Yadav said.
He further stated that the BJP had fielded a deserving candidate and that party workers had campaigned extensively.
“All party leaders worked hard, and the candidate was capable. The BJP has always tried to provide opportunities to people from humble backgrounds. If such a candidate does not receive the support of voters, it is a matter that requires reflection. Prashant Kishor, being a strategist and political advisor, effectively built expectations among the electorate through his promises and vision,” he added.
JD(U) MP Kaushalendra Kumar said the result indicated the need for greater efforts by NDA leaders and workers.
“The outcome of the Bihar by-election shows that there is a need for us to work harder. I urge senior NDA leaders to review the result carefully and identify the reasons behind the defeat,” he said.
JD(U) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak also called for a detailed review of the party’s performance.
“If we have lost, there may have been shortcomings on our part. These issues require a thorough assessment. A formal meeting alone is not enough. We need a detailed grassroots-level review involving party workers to understand the reasons behind the result,” Rajak said.
JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said, “The results are not in line with expectations. We will formulate a strategy based on the insights that emerge from our deliberations, focusing on how to truly win the hearts of the people and ensure they view us as members of their own family. A single constituency is not going to bring about a massive shift in Bihar’s politics. The public has given a mandate for 202 seats, and the tenure of this Assembly runs until 2030. So, if there are any signals or underlying reasons for public discontent, we will certainly address them.”
On the other hand, Opposition leaders described the outcome as a sign of changing public sentiment.
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav said the by-election result reflected the mood of the country.
“These elections are reflecting the mood of the people. The government is functioning in an arbitrary manner and using its majority to pass bills. It is not bringing forward legislation that serves the interests of the public. People are observing this closely,” he said.
Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad said, “These by-election results are not surprising. This was expected. The same trend will continue in the upcoming by-elections. The results are a clear indication that the BJP’s time is coming to an end. In the elections ahead, the BJP will face defeat. This series of defeats began with Ayodhya. In 2027, the PDA government will be formed under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav. Only then will the state move towards progress.”
