Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday called upon the people of the state to transform the ongoing ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’ into a mass movement to ensure cleaner surroundings and a healthier environment.
Sharing details of the recently concluded three-day statewide cleanliness drive on X, the Chief Minister highlighted the achievements of the campaign, which was conducted across more than 1,600 wards under 128 municipalities in 22 districts of the state.
“Our resolution for a clean West Bengal is the ‘Swachhta Sankalp Abhiyan’. The three-day statewide cleanliness and dengue-prevention campaign organised by the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department has been successfully completed,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, the campaign resulted in the clearing of 6,065 blocked drains, removal of garbage from 1,608 locations and cleaning of waste accumulated along 4,511 roadside stretches. Steps were also taken to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds at 27,378 places across the state.
He said cleanliness drives were carried out at key public institutions, including 1,106 markets and haats, 1,304 school and college campuses, 544 government office premises and 315 hospital premises. More than 35,000 IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials were distributed to create public awareness. A total of 118 NGOs and civil society organisations participated in the campaign.
The Chief Minister further said, “It is not just about cleaning; now is the time to take a resolve to keep our surroundings clean. Let’s turn this ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’ into an all-out people’s movement to keep ourselves healthy and the environment clean. We all take on the responsibility of keeping every neighbourhood, every street, every drain and every populated place clean.”
He added, “We are all partners in this fight to build a clean Bengal. Our resolve is a garbage-free West Bengal. United West Bengal against dengue. Stay clean. Stay healthy. Maintain the pride of West Bengal. Let the resolve of cleanliness be the pledge of all of us.”
