Kolkata, Aug 10 (IANS) The Special Task Force (STF) of the Delhi Police on Monday arrested a murder‑accused and most‑wanted criminal from Nandigram in East Midnapore district of West Bengal, with active cooperation from the local police.
The arrested person has been identified as Wasim Lambu, against whom about 125 cases, including murder charges, are registered with the Delhi Police. Acting on a tip‑off, a team of Delhi STF arrived in Nandigram and contacted the local police station.
Delhi STF and Nandigram Police conducted joint raid and search operations at various places, and Lambu was ultimately arrested from a house adjacent to Chowringhee Bazar area under Kendyamari Village Panchayat.
An officer from East Midnapore district police said Lambu is originally from Darbhanga in Bihar but had been living in Jahangir Puri area of Delhi for the past few years, where several cases, including murder, were registered against him. He had been absconding, and STF officials recently learnt he was hiding in Nandigram.
Besides murder charges, Lambu has been accused of robbery, kidnapping, rape, theft and assault on police. His arrest is considered a major success for the Delhi Police.
Just days ago, suspected Jaish‑e‑Mohammed associate Hamim Mandal was arrested from Burdwan in East Burdwan district by the STF of West Bengal Police. Investigators said his target was Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari.
Hamim’s task was to monitor Adhikari’s movements. On the same day, the Bengal STF arrested Hamim’s associate, Arpita Srakar, from Sahibganj in neighbouring Jharkhand.
Both Hamim and Arpita were active associates of the Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN), a Pakistan‑based terrorist‑criminal group. Through Arpita, SBN targeted family members of at least six current members of the West Bengal cabinet for honey‑trapping and blackmailing. Later, STF sleuths also arrested Aditya Singh, another associate of Hamim, from Howrah district.
