Biden memoir to reveal why he quit 2024 US Presidential race

Washington, July 15 (IANS) Former US President Joe Biden will release a memoir in November, offering a first-person account of his four years in the White House and the “deeply agonising calculation” behind his decision to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential race.

“The book, titled “Promise Me, America”, will be published on November 17 by Little, Brown and Company. It is available for pre-order,” Biden announced on Tuesday.

“I’ve written a book about my time as President. It’s called PROMISE ME, AMERICA. It’s coming out November 17 and is available for pre-order now,” the former President said in a social media post.

The memoir will cover Biden’s Presidential campaign, his administration, his decision to seek a second term and his eventual withdrawal from the race, according to a description released with the announcement.

The publisher described the book as a candid account of the challenges, triumphs, sorrows and accomplishments that shaped Biden’s Presidency during what it called one of the most tumultuous periods in American history.

After he took office on January 20, 2021, he faced a country divided by the January 6 attack, the Covid-19 pandemic and a steep economic downturn.

The book will recount his efforts to heal the country, restore trust in its institutions and demonstrate that democracy could still deliver for Americans.

Biden will detail his administration’s domestic record, including its multibillion-dollar infrastructure programme, efforts to revive American manufacturing and legislation intended to lower healthcare costs and address climate change.

The former President will also discuss his economic approach, which he repeatedly described as building an economy “from the middle out and the bottom up”.

On foreign policy, Biden will offer first-person accounts of the diplomacy behind rebuilding traditional US alliances, modernising Nato and assembling the international coalition that supported Ukraine against Russian aggression.

A central focus of the memoir will be his decision in the summer of 2024 to end his re-election campaign.

The publisher said that Biden will reveal for the first time the “deeply agonising calculation” behind stepping aside and placing his party and the country ahead of his personal ambitions.

Biden withdrew from the Presidential contest on July 21, 2024, following his poor debate performance against the then Republican nominee Donald Trump. He endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate.

Biden served as the 46th President of the United States from 2021 to 2025.

Before entering the White House, he represented Delaware in the US Senate for 36 years and served for eight years as Vice-President under the then President Barack Obama.
