Patna, Oct 23 (IANS) Police detained Chhotu Singh, a supporter of Mokama MLA Anant Singh, in Patna on Friday amid polling for eight Bihar Legislative Council seats.
The District Intelligence Unit (DIU) team reportedly apprehended him from the Karbigahiya area under the jurisdiction of the Jakkanpur police station over concerns about a possible law-and-order situation.
He was subsequently handed over to the local police for further action.
The detention comes amid heightened security arrangements during the Legislative Council elections.
However, an official statement detailing the reasons for his detention and the further action taken against him was awaited.
Earlier on Friday, a confrontation broke out near a polling station in Mokama between supporters of JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar and those of Anuj Kumar Singh, who is backed by Anant Singh and is contesting on a Jan Suraaj Party ticket.
The dispute reportedly began with a heated verbal exchange between the two groups and escalated into a commotion, prompting police intervention.
Barh SDPO Ramkrishna reached the spot with a police team, dispersed the crowd and detained three to four people, who were taken to the police station.
The incident occurred during polling for the Patna Graduates’ Constituency.
JD(U) has fielded Neeraj Kumar as its official candidate, while Anant Singh, a JD(U) MLA from Mokama, is supporting Anuj Kumar Singh of the Jan Suraaj Party.
Anant Singh’s support for a candidate other than his party’s official nominee has sparked discussion about political equations in the constituency and possible differences within the JD(U).
The election for the Patna Graduates’ constituency has drawn attention this time not only due to the candidacies involved but also because of the political backing and local dynamics at play.
The role of Anant Singh in the contest between Neeraj Kumar and Anuj Kumar Singh has further intensified the electoral atmosphere.
Amidst heated political rhetoric and clashes between opposing supporters, the outcome will only be revealed once the votes are counted.
