Patna, Oct 29 (IANS) In a major push to curb road accidents and ensure stricter compliance with traffic regulations, the Bihar government has ordered intensified enforcement actions across the state.
As part of the ongoing drive, authorities have already suspended or cancelled the driving licenses of approximately 15,000 traffic offenders.
Drivers caught behind the wheel despite having their licenses suspended or revoked now face immediate vehicle seizure.
The directives were issued during an executive committee meeting of the Bihar Road Safety Council’s lead agency held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Development Commissioner Mihir Kumar Singh.
Reviewing state-level safety measures, Development Commissioner Singh instructed the Transport Department to ensure that all official recommendations for driving license suspensions are processed strictly within a 15-day timeframe.
The administration aims to eliminate procedural delays in penalising repeat offenders and maintain a swift, zero-tolerance protocol against major traffic breaches.
Under the newly enforced guidelines, routine traffic checks will verify license statuses electronically.
If an individual whose license is under suspension or permanent cancellation is found operating a vehicle, law enforcement personnel will immediately impound the vehicle on the spot.
Officials stated that this strict measure is designed to serve as a deterrent and prevent unauthorised drivers from endangering public safety.
The high-level meeting focused on establishing an integrated approach to lower traffic fatalities and building a safer transit environment.
Senior representatives from key departments participated in the strategy session, including the Transport Department, Road Construction Department, Home Department, Health Department, Disaster Management Department, Education Department, Urban Development and Housing Department, alongside officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Emphasising inter-departmental coordination, the committee instructed agencies to accelerate road safety projects and enforce traffic guidelines rigorously statewide.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to curbing road mishaps through sustained monitoring, targeted enforcement drives, and strict legal action against violators.
