Patna, Nov 4 (IANS) A 60-year-old woman and her 30-year-old son were brutally murdered at their home in Tenduni village under Jagdishpur police station limits in Bihar’s Bhojpur district early on Wednesday.
The victims were asleep in their room when unidentified assailants allegedly attacked them with sharp-edged weapons and a hammer.
Their bodies were discovered inside the house early Wednesday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Ramvati Kunwar, widow of late Vishwamitra Singh, and her younger son, Sunil Kumar Singh.
The double murder has triggered panic in the village, with preliminary investigations pointing towards a possible property dispute as the motive.
Following the incident, police detained the woman’s elder son, Dinesh Kumar Singh, and his wife, Shanti Devi, for questioning.
An injury mark was also found on Dinesh’s hand, which is being examined as part of the investigation.
According to police, the victims sustained multiple injuries from sharp-edged weapons on their necks, abdomens and other parts of their bodies.
A hammer suspected to have been used in the crime was also recovered from the spot.
After receiving information about the incident, Jagdishpur Station House Officer (SHO) Ashish Kumar and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ravi Kumar reached the village with a police team and inspected the crime scene.
During questioning, Dinesh claimed that around 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday, eight masked men entered the house while his mother and younger brother were sleeping.
He alleged that the assailants attacked and killed both of them and that he sustained an injury to his hand while trying to save them.
However, police are verifying his account and examining his possible involvement in the crime.
Investigators said Dinesh and his wife were also present in the house at the time of the incident.
Police are examining the circumstances under which the attack took place, particularly the absence of any reported noise or commotion that could have alerted neighbours.
Dinesh subsequently contacted the emergency police helpline, Dial 112, following which a team from Jagdishpur police station reached the spot.
A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was also called to collect scientific evidence from the crime scene.
Police are investigating all possible angles, including a property dispute, and questioning the two detained family members.
Investigators are also trying to establish whether other people were involved in the murders.
Police are awaiting the arrival of the deceased woman’s daughter, whose statement is expected to help investigators establish further details about the family and the possible motive behind the crime.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over Tenduni village, with relatives and residents expressing shock over the brutal double murder.
