Bihar: Teenager injured during Muharram procession in Madhubani

Patna, June 27 (IANS) A sword demonstration during a Muharram procession in the Rajnagar area of Madhubani district turned into a serious accident after a sword slipped from a participant’s hand and struck a teenager in the head.

The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Rajnagar police station, causing panic among participants and forcing the procession to stop temporarily. The injured teenager has been identified as Md. Nemat, son of Md. Sahmad Hussain, a resident of Laheri Bazaar in Rajnagar.

According to eyewitnesses, the sword penetrated approximately two-and-a-half inches into his head during the display. The youth who was handling the sword reportedly fled the spot following the accident.

After the incident, local residents and procession participants rushed the injured teenager to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Rajnagar. Doctors were unable to remove the sword because it had become deeply embedded.

He was subsequently referred to the Sadar Hospital in Madhubani and later advised to seek advanced treatment at DMCH in Darbhanga.

However, his family instead took him to Ramshila Hospital in Sakri, where doctors performed surgery lasting several hours and successfully removed the sword. According to the medical team, the teenager’s condition is currently stable.

Rajnagar Station House Officer Satyendra Kumar stated that the police have received information about the incident.

However, no written complaint has yet been submitted. He said that they had received information, but no written complaint had been filed by any party so far, and that necessary action would be taken after a complaint was received.

The incident has once again raised concerns regarding the safety of weapon displays during religious processions.

Traditional demonstrations involving swords and other weapons are a part of Muharram observances in some areas, but accidents during such performances have prompted calls for greater caution, safety measures, and administrative oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
