BJP falls short of majority, relies on key allies Naidu and Nitish for support

Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar could determine fate of Modi-led government

New Delhi, June 4 (Indian  Abroad Newsdesk)

As the dust settles on India’s recent parliamentary elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finds itself tantalizingly close to the majority mark, yet 32 seats shy of securing an outright victory. In this precarious scenario, the spotlight turns to key allies Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), whose support could be crucial in backing a Narendra Modi-led government.

Latest trends released by the Election Commission of India reveal the BJP leading with 240 seats, underscoring its dominance but falling short of the magic number required for a clear mandate. Meanwhile, the TDP has secured victory on 16 seats in Andhra Pradesh, and the JD(U) on 12 seats in Bihar, positioning both parties as potential kingmakers in the unfolding political drama.

Chandrababu Naidu, known for his astute political maneuvers, has a history of being a kingmaker, having aligned with the BJP in 1999 and 2014. His influence within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could prove instrumental in not only securing the support of his party but also reviving its fortunes within the alliance.

On the other hand, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) has been a more mercurial ally, oscillating between alliances over the years. Despite his party’s fluctuating loyalties, Kumar’s recent electoral success in Bihar has catapulted him back into the political spotlight, making him a pivotal figure in the formation of the next government.

Speculation abounds on whether these crucial allies will remain steadfast within the NDA or opt for a change in allegiance, given their history of alliance shifts. Both the TDP and JD(U) have traditionally eschewed strong alignment with Hindutva policies, indicating a potential push for collective decision-making within the NDA framework.

However, Nitish Kumar’s reputation for switching sides, earning him the moniker “Paltu Ram,” introduces an element of unpredictability into the equation. Cynical observers suggest that Kumar’s allegiances could sway in either direction, adding further uncertainty to the already complex political landscape.

As negotiations and behind-the-scenes discussions unfold, all eyes remain on Naidu and Nitish, whose decisions could ultimately shape the trajectory of Indian politics in the coming years.
