The Consulate General of India, Brisbane, in partnership with Councillor Penny Wolff of the Brisbane City Council, organised a special Saree Draping Workshop on March 11 to mark International Women’s Day.
The event brought together Brisbane City councillors, members of the diplomatic corps, and officials from government agencies including DFAT and Tourism and Events Queensland.
Participants experienced an evening centred on cultural exchange, featuring saree draping sessions, dance activities, and a shared dinner that encouraged community interaction.
The workshop was conducted by Sharmeen Thomas, who introduced attendees to the elegance and cultural significance of the saree. Guests also took part in learning Bollywood dance steps, adding a lively dimension to the celebrations.
In addition, participants sampled a range of Indian teas, offering a taste of India’s diverse tea traditions. Organisers said the programme provided an engaging platform to celebrate feminine energy, cultural connection, and friendship while marking International Women’s Day.
