The Consulate General of India in Brisbane marked the 79th Independence Day of India with a heartfelt ceremony that blended tradition, patriotism, and community spirit.
From early morning, members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India gathered at the Consulate’s premises on Level 12, 301 Coronation Drive, Milton. By 8:30 AM, the lobby and terrace were filled with dignitaries, community leaders, and well-wishers, ready to participate in one of Queensland’s most important annual events for the Indian community.
At exactly 9:00 AM, Consul General Neetu Bhagotia unfurled the Indian tricolour, its saffron, white, and green bands gleaming in the crisp morning sunlight. As the flag ascended, the national anthem rang out, sung with pride by all present.
The ceremony drew participants from across the community, including representatives of cultural, business, and student organisations, along with supporters from the wider Queensland public. After the formal programme, guests enjoyed light refreshments, using the opportunity to exchange greetings, take photographs, and reflect on the day’s meaning.
This year’s celebration holds a special place in India’s history — marking 79 years since independence in 1947. While the years between 1947 and 2025 total 78, India counts the first Independence Day as the first anniversary, making this year’s observance the 79th.
As the tricolour fluttered proudly over Brisbane, it was clear that while the geographical distance from India may be vast, the emotional bond remains as strong as ever.
