CGI & AIBC explore investment opportunities with Newcastle leaders

Sydney, August 7 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)

Consul General of India (CGI) in Sydney Dr. Janakiraman Sarvesvaran and Irfan Malik from the Australia India Business Council (AIBC) met with City of Newcastle’s Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen recently. The discussions focused on expanding collaboration between Newcastle and India, emphasizing the potential for investment, talent mobility, and market opportunities.

With the new Newcastle International Airport enhancing connectivity, there are significant prospects for Indian aviation and regional exports. The AIBC and Newcastle leaders are keen to explore business partnerships, regional development, and potential sister city relations with Indian cities, aiming to bolster trade and tourism across key sectors.

The meeting also highlighted the strategic advantages of Newcastle’s improved infrastructure and its role in connecting Indian businesses to the growing markets in the Newcastle, Hunter, New England, and North Western regions. Both parties expressed enthusiasm about leveraging these opportunities to attract investment and talent from India, enhancing bilateral trade and fostering regional growth.

The discussion covered potential collaborations across various sectors, including advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and education, with an eye on strengthening ties through initiatives such as talent mobility programs and business scaling pathways. The AIBC and Newcastle officials are also exploring the possibility of establishing sister city relationships with Indian cities, aiming to deepen cultural and economic connections.

The engagement was supported by key stakeholders, including the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), the Centre for Australia-India Relations, and the University of Newcastle, reflecting a broad commitment to enhancing Australia-India relations. The continued collaboration is expected to yield significant benefits for regional businesses, educational institutions, and the tourism sector.

The City of Newcastle plans to actively participate in upcoming initiatives and engage with Indian businesses, leveraging the strengths of the region’s diverse industries. The involvement of high-profile organizations such as the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and local MPs Pat Conroy and Sharon Claydon, underscores the broad support for strengthening these international connections.

AIBC and City of Newcastle representatives are expected to work closely on developing actionable plans and initiatives to support this expanded partnership. This includes identifying and addressing barriers to trade and investment, fostering talent exchanges, and promoting Newcastle as a key hub for business opportunities linked to India’s burgeoning market.

The anticipated sister city relationships could serve as a platform for cultural and economic exchange, further strengthening the ties between Newcastle and Indian cities. Both parties are committed to ensuring that these connections translate into tangible benefits for businesses, educational institutions, and local communities in both regions.
