Coast Guard’s fast patrol vessel ‘Achal’ to further strengthen maritime security

Vadinar, June 23 (IANS) The Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) newly-commissioned Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), ICGS Achal, has arrived at its base port in Vadinar in the North-West Region, marking a significant enhancement in the force’s operational capabilities and maritime security infrastructure.

A special welcome ceremony was organised to commemorate the vessel’s arrival. The event was attended by senior Indian Coast Guard officers, personnel, local administration officials, and other dignitaries. The deployment of ICGS Achal at Vadinar is being viewed as a major milestone in strengthening the region’s maritime security framework.

ICGS Achal was formally inducted into the Indian Coast Guard fleet in Goa on May 9. The state-of-the-art vessel, measuring 51 metres in length, is equipped with advanced navigation, communication, and surveillance systems. Designed for prolonged sea patrols, rapid response operations, and a wide range of maritime missions, the vessel combines speed, endurance, and operational flexibility.

According to the Indian Coast Guard, the North-West Region holds immense strategic importance from the perspective of national maritime security. Gujarat’s extensive coastline, its proximity to international maritime trade routes, and the high volume of maritime activity in the area make the region particularly sensitive and critical.

The deployment of ICGS Achal at Vadinar is expected to significantly strengthen coastal surveillance and enhance the overall maritime security architecture of the region. The vessel will improve the Coast Guard’s ability to maintain continuous surveillance over vast stretches of sea and ensure swift responses to emergencies, security threats, and suspicious maritime activities.

The vessel is expected to play a vital role in safeguarding India’s maritime boundaries, preventing illegal infiltration, conducting anti-smuggling operations, enforcing maritime laws, and protecting national maritime interests. In addition, it will contribute significantly to ensuring the safety and security of fishermen operating at sea and provide timely assistance to vessels in distress.

The Indian Coast Guard has consistently played a crucial role in protecting the nation’s maritime frontiers, conducting search and rescue operations, controlling marine pollution, and providing humanitarian assistance during emergencies. The induction of ICGS Achal into the fleet is expected to further improve the speed, reach, and effectiveness of these operations.

Equipped with modern sensors and surveillance technology, the vessel will be capable of monitoring maritime activities with greater precision and undertaking immediate action whenever required. Its advanced capabilities will enhance the Coast Guard’s operational readiness and strengthen its ability to address emerging maritime challenges.

Experts believe that the deployment of ICGS Achal reflects the Government of India’s continued emphasis on strengthening coastal and maritime security. In recent years, considerable focus has been placed on expanding the Coast Guard fleet, upgrading surveillance capabilities, and reinforcing maritime security infrastructure across the country.

Defence experts noted that the arrival of ICGS Achal at Vadinar represents more than the addition of a new vessel to the fleet. It underscores India’s long-term commitment to maritime security and coastal defence. The vessel is expected to play a key role in protecting maritime borders, enhancing coastal vigilance, and ensuring safety and stability in the maritime domain, while further strengthening national security interests in the strategically important north-west maritime region.
