Damascus, Sep 21 (IANS) At least four people were injured early Monday in a series of explosions at a Syrian military site in Aleppo province, local authorities said.
The explosions occurred near the town of al-Eis, triggering successive blasts through the area.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britain-based war monitor, said that an ammunition depot had exploded, but the nature and affiliation of the facility had not been independently verified, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The injured were transferred to field hospitals for treatment, while civil defence teams, military police and internal security forces were deployed to the area, according to local authorities.
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents nearby to remain indoors, while Faisal Mohammad Ali, head of local civil defence operations, warned civilians to stay away from the site as continuing explosions hindered the arrival of additional ambulances and rescue teams.
Monday’s incident comes amid a series of deadly explosions involving ammunition and military facilities in Syria. Since early September, at least three ammunition-related explosions have hit military sites across the country, leaving more than 35 people dead, according to local reports and the SOHR.
Syria’s Ministry of Defence on Saturday held a funeral for 11 of its personnel killed in an explosion at a military site in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour a day earlier, according to state media.
The funeral procession was held at the National Hospital in Deir al-Zour city for the 11 servicemen killed in Friday’s explosion in the Ayash area west of the provincial capital.
The explosion occurred at a weapons storage facility, according to local authorities. Emergency, health, and security teams were dispatched to the area following the blast, while rescue teams searched for casualties and missing personnel.
The cause of the blast remains under investigation, with no official findings released yet.
Earlier in September, an explosion at a temporary facility used to collect weapons and remnants of war near Sarmada in the northwestern province of Idlib killed 14 people, according to local health authorities.
Another explosion was reported at an ammunition storage site near al-Dumayr in the Damascus countryside this month, with no casualties reported.
