Moga, Aug 5 (IANS) All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and party’s Punjab In-Charge, Bhupesh Baghel, said on Wednesday that he has seen overwhelming response among the people across 12 districts he visited so far to bring the Congress back to power in the state.
Addressing the ‘Harr booth, Congress Mazboot’ programme here, Baghel said he could feel from his long experience in politics that people of Punjab “see the Congress as the only option to replace the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government that has failed people’s promises and expectations”.
“Bhagwant Mann has drowned Punjab into debt and drugs,” he said, while pointing out how the state economy and the law and order have collapsed.
He added that nobody felt safe in Punjab as the gangsters were killing people without any fear of law.
“Punjab has never seen such lawlessness ever.”
Underlining the need for strengthening the party, Baghel said under the ‘Sangathan Sirjan Programme’ of the party at the AICC level, the party is being strengthened at the grassroots and booth level.
He congratulated the Punjab Congress leadership for appointing booth-level agents in all the booths across the state.
Asking the grassroots level workers that they were the flag-bearers of the party, Baghel said no big leader could win an election without the support of the grassroots.
He also took a jibe at the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying both of them tried to disturb and distract Congress programmes and pointed out how AAP had erected hoardings asking him to “go back”.
These are signs of the panic by the political rivals in Punjab, he remarked.
Speaking on the occasion, State Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring expressed satisfaction over the response the party programmes have been receiving.
He said these programmes were never planned to be of this level, but people joined on their own.
He added that this was the reason some people, both outside and inside the party, started feeling jittery and they tried to disrupt these programmes.
However, Warring added, the very fact that someone was trying to disrupt these programmes proved their success as the political opponents were unnerved.
Warring also condemned the Bhagwant Mann-led state government for misusing the police force to brutalise peaceful protesters like the teachers, the MGNREGA workers, safai karamcharis, teachers, farmers and government employees.
