Members of the Indian and Indo-Fijian community gathered in Brisbane to commemorate Girmit Diwas at a special event organised by the GOPIO Queensland, honouring the legacy, resilience and contributions of the Girmitiya community.
The programme reflected on the history and sacrifices of indentured labourers while celebrating the enduring cultural heritage, achievements and community contributions of Indo-Fijians across generations.
The Consul General of India in Brisbane Neetu Bhagotia attended the event as Chief Guest and delivered the keynote address. She also paid floral tributes to mark the occasion and acknowledged the important role played by the Girmitiya community in preserving Indian traditions, language and cultural values overseas.
During the event, an award was presented to Justice Davendra Pathak in recognition of his distinguished service and significant contributions to the Fijian community.
The event was attended by local councillors, members of the Indian community and friends of India, reflecting the strong community support for preserving the shared history and heritage of the Girmitiya descendants.
The commemoration served as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of indentured labourers and highlighted the continuing contribution of the Indo-Fijian community to multicultural societies around the world.
