The Governor-General welcomed representatives of FightMND to Admiralty House to recognise the organisation’s extraordinary efforts and celebrate Neale Daniher AO, the 2025 Australian of the Year, whose leadership has galvanised the nation in the fight against motor neurone disease (MND).
Diagnosed with MND, Daniher has responded with remarkable purpose, bringing together philanthropists, scientists, medical experts, sports leaders and community advocates to advance research and accelerate the search for effective treatments. FightMND has raised $25 million this year, reflecting the growing national commitment to tackling the disease.
The Governor-General acknowledged Daniher’s courage and shared stories from past events such as the Big Freeze at the MCG and walks along Daniher Way. She also extended appreciation to his family — including Bec and Jan Daniher — his carer Nicki Stewart, as well as individuals living with MND such as Ron and Damien who attended the event.
Recognition was also given to FightMND Board Chair Mike Schneider, CEO Matt Tilley, Professor Matthew Kiernan AM of NeuRA, Charles Curran AC, MC David Campbell OAM and musician David Hobson, along with key sporting leaders and philanthropists who contribute to the cause.
The evening also marked the launch of Daniher’s book The Power of Choice, a reflection on resilience and shared humanity.
