Canberra, February 12 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)
The Governor-General (GG) of Australia hosted members of the Indian women’s national cricket team and Governor-General’s XI women’s cricket side at Admiralty House in Sydney ahead of their fixture at North Sydney Oval on February 13.
The gathering brought together GG’s XI captain Charli Knott and India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, providing an opportunity to extend best wishes to both teams as they prepared for the match. The event highlighted the growing profile of women’s cricket and the strong sporting ties between Australia and India.
The Governor-General’s XI programme was established in the 2015–16 season by former Governor-General Peter Cosgrove to promote and support women’s cricket by showcasing a mix of established and emerging players. The annual fixture also serves as a curtain-raiser to the Australia–India women’s multiformat series, which is scheduled to begin on February 15 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Officials noted that the pre-match reception reflected the importance of international sporting exchanges in strengthening people-to-people connections while celebrating the achievements of women athletes on the global stage.
