Ahmedabad, Aug 7 (IANS) The Ahmedabad City Police checked more than 4,700 vehicles. They carried out enforcement action against drunken driving, prohibition offences and narcotics during a citywide overnight combing operation conducted in the early hours of Friday.
The operation was carried out between midnight and 5 a.m. on August 7 on the instructions of the Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut, with vehicle checks conducted at 59 locations across Ahmedabad.
Simultaneously, teams from the Crime Branch and the Special Operations Group (SOG) conducted combing operations in different parts of the city.
According to officials, a total of 4,712 vehicles were checked during the drive. Police detained 66 vehicles under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act for being driven without the required documents or valid insurance.
Illegal black film was removed from 82 vehicles, while 24 motorists were booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police also registered three cases under Sections 281 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against motorists for rash and negligent driving and for causing obstruction on public roads.
As part of the enforcement drive, 13 cases were registered under Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act for violating prohibitory orders. In comparison, another 16 cases were filed under Section 135(1) for violating the notification prohibiting the carrying of weapons.
Under the Prohibition Act, police registered seven cases involving possession of prohibited liquor. They seized 27 bottles of foreign liquor worth Rs 6,511 along with other property valued at Rs 6,66,511.
Officers also recovered 19 litres of country liquor worth Rs 3,800 and other property worth Rs 2,805. In addition, 21 cases were registered against individuals found consuming liquor.
Police also registered two cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In the Gaekwad Haveli police station area, officers recovered 359 bottles of prohibited cough syrup worth Rs 63,543 from a four-wheeler and detained three people.
In a separate case in the Kagdapith police station area, police seized 115 grams of ganja worth Rs 5,075 from a two-wheeler and arrested one accused.
The operation also resulted in two cases being registered under Section 142 of the Gujarat Police Act against externed persons found violating the terms of their externment.
Police further verified 199 history-sheeters and MCR-listed individuals residing in different parts of Ahmedabad who had previously been involved in criminal offences.
The overnight operation was conducted under involved three Additional Commissioners of Police, three Joint Commissioners of Police, 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 23 Assistant Commissioners of Police, 80 Police Inspectors and around 2,000 police personnel.
