Gujarat to send delegation to Scotland to study offshore energy expertise ahead of CWG 2030

Gandhinagar, Oct 23 (IANS) Gujarat will send a delegation to Scotland to study its expertise in offshore energy, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said on Friday after the state government signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the Scottish Government to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, sports, education, trade and investment.

The agreements were signed in Gandhinagar in the presence of Patel and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, who was accompanied by a delegation.

The two sides exchanged copies of the MoUs during a meeting aimed at expanding economic ties, promoting people-to-people connections and identifying areas for collaboration in sustainable development and innovation.

“Gujarat, which has the longest coastline among Indian states, has significant potential for offshore energy,” Patel said.

He described the state as a leader in renewable energy in India and said cooperation with Scotland could provide further momentum to its efforts in the sector.

Swinney expressed confidence that the agreements would create new opportunities in culture, sports, renewable energy and life sciences.

He also expressed interest in sharing Scotland’s experience in offshore energy with Gujarat. The agreements come as Gujarat prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The state is expected to explore Scotland’s experience of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, including preparations for major sporting events, infrastructure development and the promotion of physical activity and fitness.

The MoUs provide a framework for cooperation in trade and investment, entrepreneurship, research, education, skill development, energy and sustainability.

They also envisage the exchange of knowledge, expertise and best practices, along with partnerships between businesses, universities, colleges and other institutions in the two regions.

Chief Secretary M K Das welcomed the Scottish delegation and outlined opportunities for collaboration in sports, renewable energy, economic partnerships and cultural exchange.

“The agreements would help connect businesses, institutions and experts to support the transition towards a more sustainable economy and create opportunities for innovation, professional development and institutional partnerships,” he said.

Das added that academic and research collaboration could strengthen links between educational institutions in Gujarat and Scotland and encourage exchanges involving students, researchers and teachers.

The agreements also seek to build long-term relationships through cooperation in culture, heritage and creative industries.

Executive Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries Department, Rajeev Topno, thanked the participants and expressed confidence that the agreements would encourage dialogue, trust and partnerships in education, skill development, sports and energy.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Sanjeev Kumar; principal secretaries of the Urban Development and Education departments; Additional Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Vikrant Pandey; and senior officials from various departments.
