The High Commission of India, in collaboration with FINACT, organised a Crisis and Emergency Workshop aimed at strengthening awareness about consular services, legal support and emergency preparedness within the Indian community.
The session brought together a panel comprising High Commission officials along with representatives from a legal firm, ACT funeral homes and the ACT Multicultural Hub. The workshop focused on equipping participants with practical information on navigating difficult situations, ranging from legal challenges to post-death procedures.
Officials explained various aspects of consular assistance, including Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) services, eVisa and Emergency Visa processes, as well as the issuance of Emergency Certificates. Participants were also advised on the importance of informing the High Commission or relevant Consulate if an individual is arrested or detained, enabling them to access consular support when required. The significance of registering with the High Commission was emphasised as a key step in ensuring timely assistance during emergencies.
The discussion also highlighted avenues for legal aid, particularly for individuals facing domestic violence or abuse, with a special focus on temporary visa holders who may be unfamiliar with available support systems. Legal experts outlined resources and pathways for seeking help, underscoring the importance of early intervention and community awareness.
In addition, detailed guidance was provided on post-death requirements, including necessary documentation, clearances, funeral arrangements, repatriation procedures and associated costs. Representatives from funeral services shared insights into local processes, helping families better understand the practical and financial aspects involved during times of loss.
Organisers said the workshop served as an important platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing, reinforcing the High Commission’s commitment to supporting the Indian diaspora through awareness initiatives and collaborative community engagement.
