London, Aug 22 (IANS) Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised Joao Pedro’s personality and leadership qualities after the Brazilian forward committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract until 2034.
Pedro, who joined Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025, signed fresh terms with the London club ahead of their opening Premier League fixture against Fulham on Monday.
The Brazil international enjoyed an impressive first full season at Stamford Bridge, finishing as Chelsea’s top scorer with 20 goals across all competitions. He was also voted the club’s Player of the Season by supporters.
Alonso said Pedro’s influence has grown beyond his performances on the pitch and highlighted the attitude he has shown during pre-season.
“We talk a lot with Joao because he’s not just a great player, but also a great person. He has a great personality within the group,” Alonso said, as quoted by Chelsea.
“I think that his development as a great player and as a leader is very noticeable every day, and in each game. He has this focus and this desire to have a great season, to score goals, but he is also focused on helping the team,” he added.
Pedro made an immediate impact after arriving at Chelsea, scoring twice against Fluminense in the Club World Cup semi-final before finding the net again in the final against Paris Saint-Germain as the Blues lifted the trophy.
He carried that form into the 2025/26 campaign, scoring against West Ham United on the opening day before producing decisive goals against Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli. His tally of 20 goals saw him emerge as Chelsea’s leading scorer last season.
Alonso said he was pleased to see Pedro extend his stay and believes Chelsea can help the striker achieve his ambitions. “I’m very happy with Joao and with this news (signing a new contract). I’m very impressed with his personality, and now we need to help him in reaching his goals,” Alonso said.
Pedro had initially signed an eight-year contract when he moved to Chelsea, but his latest extension now keeps him tied to the club until 2034.
With the No.9 shirt on his back, Pedro will be expected to lead Chelsea’s attack as Alonso begins his first Premier League campaign in charge, starting with Monday’s London derby at Fulham.
