India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay, has called for greater ambition and delivery in advancing the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, describing it as a “cornerstone for a peaceful, secure, safe and open Indo-Pacific”.
Speaking at the Australian Institute for International Affairs (AIIA) in Brisbane on July 8, Baglay emphasised the growing importance of India-Australia ties amid evolving regional and global challenges.
“It’s time to get ambitious and deliver the vision of our leadership for the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” he said, adding that the collaboration is crucial for maintaining stability and openness in the Indo-Pacific region.
The High Commissioner underscored that India’s foreign policy is deeply rooted not only in current geopolitical realities but also in its enduring civilisational values. He noted that these values—grounded in dialogue, inclusivity, and peaceful coexistence—offer a unique approach to international engagement.
Baglay also pointed to India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) mission, outlining how the country’s transformation offers vast opportunities for deepening bilateral cooperation and contributing to global progress.
The event brought together foreign policy experts, academics, students, and members of the Indian diaspora, many of whom expressed optimism about the future of India-Australia relations.
The India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signed in 2020, has seen significant momentum in areas including defence, education, clean energy, and digital innovation. Baglay’s remarks further reinforce the shared commitment of both nations to work together for regional peace and prosperity.
