The High Commission of India in Canberra hosted a distinguished reception aboard the Indian Naval Ship INS Nilgiri during its deployment for Exercise Kakadu 2026, highlighting India’s expanding maritime engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, Chief of the Royal Australian Navy, attended the event as Chief Guest, underscoring the growing defence cooperation between India and Australia. Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, who is leading the Indian delegation at the exercise, was also present.
The reception drew participation from members of the diplomatic corps, a Member of the New South Wales Parliament, and senior naval representatives from countries participating in the multinational exercise. The gathering served as a platform for strengthening professional ties and fostering dialogue among regional maritime partners.
Exercise Kakadu, hosted by Australia, is one of the region’s premier naval exercises, bringing together multiple nations to enhance interoperability and collective maritime security. India’s active participation reflects its commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
The event aboard INS Nilgiri not only showcased India’s naval capabilities but also reinforced its role as a key partner in regional security cooperation.
