India-Singapore economic ties get fresh push with focus on trade, investment, technology: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday held a series of high-level bilateral and business engagements in Singapore, seeking to deepen India-Singapore cooperation in trade, investment, technology and business while opening up new avenues for mutually beneficial economic growth.

Goyal began his Singapore engagements with a call on Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the Istana, followed by participation in the fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) and the fourth India-Singapore Business Roundtable (ISBR) at Hotel Shangri-La.

The ministerial and business roundtables focused on strengthening bilateral economic engagement and identifying new areas of cooperation between the two countries. The discussions were followed by an MoU signing ceremony.

In the afternoon, Goyal held Government-to-Business (G2B) meetings with senior representatives of the global business and institutional community, including the Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN) and Keppel Infrastructure.

The meetings focused on expanding India-Singapore collaboration in key areas such as agri-exports, GCC-based commercial parks, fintech and sustainable infrastructure, with an emphasis on creating greater opportunities for businesses and investors.

Goyal also jointly visited an APEDA-FairPrice initiative at City Square Mall with Singapore’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry Gan Siow Huang. The initiative showcased India’s agricultural products and highlighted the growing trade and market linkages between the two countries.

Later in the evening, Goyal participated in the India-Singapore Business Forum organised by FICCI at the INSEAD Asia Campus. He also joined a fireside chat on “India in the New Global Growth Equation: Growth and Opportunity for Businesses in Asia and the World”, followed by an interactive session with members of the business community.

The engagements come as India and Singapore seek to further strengthen their longstanding economic partnership amid a rapidly changing global economic environment. The discussions placed particular emphasis on trade and investment flows, technology cooperation and stronger business-to-business linkages.

The Indian delegation at the fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable included Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce Jitin Prasada.
