Indian Ocean security focus of expert discussion in Perth

The Consul General, Kajari Biswas, attended a panel discussion on security in the Indian Ocean organised by the Australia Institute of International Affairs in collaboration with the Indo-Pacific Research Centre (IPRC) at Murdoch University.

The event brought together leading academics, researchers and strategic affairs experts to examine the evolving security landscape of the Indian Ocean region and its growing significance in regional and global geopolitics.

The panel featured Dr Frédéric Grare, Senior Research Fellow at the ANU National Security College; Associate Professor Mary Anne Kenny, Principal Fellow at the Indo-Pacific Research Centre; Dr Troy Lee-Brown, Research Fellow at the UWA Defence and Security Institute; and Anubhav Shankar Goswami, Doctoral Candidate at the Indo-Pacific Research Centre.

Participants discussed a range of issues affecting security and stability in the Indian Ocean, including strategic competition, maritime security, regional cooperation and emerging geopolitical challenges.

The discussion highlighted the increasing importance of the Indian Ocean as a critical maritime corridor for global trade, energy supplies and economic connectivity, making regional stability a matter of international significance.

Experts also explored the role of regional partnerships, dialogue and multilateral cooperation in addressing common challenges and ensuring a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The event provided an opportunity for engagement between policymakers, academics, researchers and members of the broader community interested in developments across the Indian Ocean region.

The Consul General welcomed the initiative and the opportunity to exchange views with leading experts on issues that are central to the future security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific.

The discussion underscored the growing importance of informed policy dialogue and research in shaping responses to the complex strategic challenges facing the Indian Ocean region.
