India’s High Commissioner exposes Pakistan’s terror nexus and nuclear threat in ABC interview

Canberra, May 13 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)

India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay, has sharply criticised Pakistan’s long-standing role in fuelling cross-border terrorism and destabilising regional peace in a wide-ranging interview with Stephen Dziedzic of ABC News.

Describing Pakistan as harbouring an “Unholy Trinity”—a combination of anti-India policy, clandestine Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) development, and state-sponsored terrorism—Baglay warned of the global danger posed by Islamabad’s strategic posture. He said Pakistan’s decades-old approach aims to “bleed India through a thousand cuts” by sustaining cross-border terrorism under the cover of nuclear deterrence.

“Pakistan has become a ‘silk route’ for international terrorism,” Baglay said, exposing its consistent use of denial, deflection, and delay to avoid accountability for terror networks operating from within its borders. He cited evidence of Pakistan’s support for extremist groups and its refusal to dismantle terror infrastructure despite global pressure.

Referring to the devastating Bali bombings and the recent April 2025 attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the High Commissioner emphasised the international consequences of allowing terrorism to flourish unchecked. He placed direct responsibility for recent escalations on Pakistan, accusing it of undermining peace while masking aggression behind nuclear threats.

Baglay also rejected the false equivalence often drawn between India and Pakistan as nuclear powers. He pointed out that while India maintains a transparent and responsible nuclear doctrine including a “No First Use” policy, Pakistan’s clandestine acquisition and ambiguous posture remain a serious global security concern.

The High Commissioner called for fair and accurate global discourse on terrorism, highlighting inconsistencies in how terrorist attacks in India are portrayed in international coverage.

Ending on a forward-looking note, Baglay reaffirmed India’s developmental vision: “Our focus is to build a Viksit Bharat by 2047. We are committed to working closely with partners like Australia for a secure, prosperous, and peaceful Indo-Pacific region.”
