New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday sharply criticised Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s recent call to “smash patriarchy,” accusing the Opposition of selectively targeting Hindu society while remaining silent on issues faced by minority women.
Reacting to Gandhi’s statement, Rijiju asked why the Congress always appears to single out Hindus. “Congress says, ‘Smash patriarchy.’ Why always target only Hindus? What about minority women? What about Triple Talaq? Are Muslim girls not our sisters and betis?” the minister posted on his X handle.
Rijiju stressed that genuine support for women must be inclusive and consistent. “If you truly stand with women, stand with every woman, every community, every time,” he said. He argued that selective campaigns risk dividing society rather than empowering women across the board.
Highlighting the achievements of Indian women, Rijiju pointed to their growing presence in high‑profile fields. “Our Indian betis are leading in ISRO, flying fighter jets and winning medals at the Olympics,” he noted. He also referred to government initiatives showcasing women’s economic and technological empowerment, citing “Nari Shakti” visible in Lakhpati Didis and Drone Didis.
The minister cautioned against narratives that, in his view, undermine the progress of Indian women for political purposes. “Do not undermine Indian betis to divide Indian society,” Rijiju wrote, framing the Congress’s approach as potentially divisive rather than constructive.
LoP Rahul Gandhi had recently used the phrase “smash patriarchy” while addressing a largely female audience, describing India’s 70 crore women as the country’s biggest asset and criticising what he called rigid patriarchal control that limits women’s freedom of expression and opportunity.
Rijiju’s response continues a pattern of sharp exchanges between the two leaders on issues of women’s empowerment, reservation and social justice. The minister positioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s approach as one that celebrates and expands opportunities for women from all communities, rather than focusing criticism on any single section of society.
