Melbourne Cobras unveiled as New Hockey One League franchise

Melbourne, March 12 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)

Hockey Victoria has announced the launch of the Melbourne Cobras as the eighth franchise in the Hockey One League, marking a significant step in expanding the sport’s reach across Victoria.

The introduction of the new team is expected to strengthen engagement with Melbourne’s vibrant Indian diaspora while creating fresh opportunities to promote hockey at both grassroots and elite levels.

The franchise aims to provide high-performance pathways for players in Victoria and inspire the next generation of athletes to take up the sport.

Speaking at the launch, Consul General Anish Rajan noted that the Melbourne Cobras could act as a bridge between hockey fans in Australia and India. He said the initiative has the potential to deepen people-to-people ties and open avenues for economic and commercial partnerships in the sports sector and related industries.

Officials said the new franchise is expected to contribute to the growth of hockey in the state by encouraging wider participation and fostering stronger community connections through sport.
