NVIDIA is working with eight Australian cloud and data-centre companies on an AI infrastructure expansion that could support up to 2 gigawatts of capacity by 2027, as demand for advanced computing grows among businesses, researchers and AI developers.
The initiative involves Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk. NVIDIA said the companies are expanding land, power and data-centre capacity for AI facilities based on its DSX platform, while the participating providers will operate the facilities and NVIDIA will provide accelerated computing, networking, software and ecosystem support.
The planned infrastructure is intended to give Australian startups, universities, researchers, enterprises and AI-native companies greater access to high-performance computing. NVIDIA said the expansion will also increase access to its Nemotron open models, enabling local organisations to develop AI models, applications and agents for Australian industries. Sharon AI plans to deploy up to 68,000 NVIDIA GPUs using Quantum InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet networking. IREN, meanwhile, is applying the DSX architecture to its development portfolio, including its 800-megawatt Bundey campus in South Australia. Firmus is expanding its Project Southgate initiative to develop NVIDIA-powered AI factories serving hyperscale and AI-native demand in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, according to NVIDIA.
Megaport is expanding access to accelerated computing through its Latitude.sh subsidiary, while ResetData is developing an Australian AI cloud platform aimed at enterprises, government and research organisations requiring high-performance computing and Australian data residency.
CDC said it has more than 550MW of capacity across Australia and New Zealand, with another 800MW under construction. Its facilities use direct liquid-to-chip cooling, while NEXTDC and AirTrunk are also developing high-density, liquid-cooled infrastructure designed for AI workloads.
The expansion is also being linked directly to applications being developed by Australian technology companies.
The NVIDIA Newsroom report said healthcare technology company Heidi is using Nemotron models alongside its specialised clinical knowledge to develop voice-driven AI applications. Heidi co-founder and chief technology officer Yu Liu said the combination is designed to help AI work across patient histories, clinical context and medical guidelines while maintaining expected privacy and trust.
Atlassian is using NVIDIA AI to advance semantic search in its Rovo platform, with the aim of making enterprise search more context-aware and better able to identify relevant information across complex data and workflows. Guihong Cao, Atlassian’s head of engineering for Rovo and AI, said NVIDIA’s accelerated computing infrastructure and open-model ecosystem are important to the company’s development of AI capabilities.
The newly released NVIDIA material also places the Australian expansion in the broader context of growing demand for AI computing capacity. NVIDIA vice president Raj Mirpuri said the company’s DSX platform is designed to support successive generations of computing infrastructure, potentially allowing Australian operators to expand capacity as AI workloads evolve.
Reuters separately reported that NVIDIA’s Australian initiative is part of a broader push to expand AI computing infrastructure through partnerships with local cloud and data-centre operators, with the projects targeting up to 2GW by 2027.
The 2GW figure is a planned buildout target for 2027, rather than existing operational capacity, underscoring the scale of investment expected as Australia seeks to strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.
