Opposition slams MP CM Mohan Yadav over controversial UCC remarks

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS) Opposition leaders on Saturday hit out at Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav over his alleged controversial remarks regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), accusing him of being “obsessed with power”.

CM Yadav sparked a row by saying: “Under the proposed Uniform Civil Code, only a person who has one marriage will have the legal right to reside in Madhya Pradesh.”

“Why should there be separate laws for Hindus and Muslims? There should be one law for everyone. If Ram will marry once, why should Rahim marry twice or four times? Muslim sisters are also our sisters,” he said during a public event.

Responding to the remarks, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said: “They (BJP government in MP) will say anything. When they have power, they can do anything. They have no concern for the people. They are obsessed with power. They know that the day they lose power, no one will come to their aid.”

Referring to the alleged links of Mohan Yadav’s family with the Ujjan land deals, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi said: “MP CM should say that whoever indulges in corruption does not deserve to hold a responsible position and saying so, he should resign.”

“The nation understands his (Yadav’s) attempts to divert attention from the issue,” he told IANS.

Echoing similar views, Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput said: “Mohan Yadav has lost his mind because scams are continuously being exposed under his regime, like the land mafia.”

Congress MLA Yadvendra Singh Bundela added: He (Yadav) does not have any issue left; that is why he talks on Hindu-Muslim-related things wherever he goes. He wants to provoke the public to speak against Muslims.”

“What does he have to do with anyone’s marriage or religion. Also, why is Lord Ram being dragged into all this?” Bundela asked while speaking to IANS.

RJD MLA Bhai Virendra emphasised that the country belongs to everybody, irrespective of Hindus or Muslims. “Everybody has the right to follow their religion in this secular country; the Constitution prescribes that.”

“That’s why such kinds of remarks should not be made and should not destroy the secular ethos of the country,” he added.

However, President of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad Mahant Ravindra Puri backed Yadav’s statements, saying “Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has given a very good message.”

“India has had an ancient tradition…our scriptures have emphasised the principle of ‘one woman, one husband’ (celibacy outside marriage). Therefore, one should have only one life partner, just as the example of Lord Shri Ram was given. This will also help maintain a balance in population density. It will help prevent issues such as divorces, incidents of dowry harassment, and the killing of women after marriage,” he said.

Moreover, Ravindra Puri asked the chief ministers of all states to follow the statement given by Mohan Yadav.
