Poland: 5 injured in multi-vehicle collision

Warsaw, June 26 (IANS) Five people were injured on Friday after a multi-vehicle collision on Poland’s A8 motorway bypass around Wroclaw, in southwest Poland, according to Polish media RMF24, citing local authorities.

The accident, which involved five passenger cars, occurred on Friday afternoon on the carriageway heading towards Warsaw between the Wroclaw West and Wroclaw Airport interchanges, according to the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.

Local police and emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed by medical officials.

The A8 motorway serves as a crucial bypass route around Wroclaw, one of Poland’s largest cities, connecting the city to the national road network. The stretch where the accident occurred is known to experience heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours and holiday travel seasons.

As of 7 p.m. local time (1700 GMT), traffic had been restored on the affected carriageway. However, local media reported that congestion was expected to take some time to fully clear, as vehicles had accumulated during the emergency response and investigation.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest that adverse weather conditions and high speeds may have contributed to the incident, though officials have not confirmed a specific cause.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways advised drivers to exercise caution in the area and to expect residual delays. Motorists were also urged to consider alternative routes while traffic normalised.

Poland’s A8 motorway has witnessed several multi-vehicle accidents in recent years, prompting authorities to implement stricter speed enforcement measures and improved road signage along key stretches.
