Queensland Muslim elder Aunty Janeth Deen recognised for decades of service

Aunty Janeth Deen, a highly respected elder of Queensland’s Muslim and multicultural communities, received a significant honour at the State Library of Queensland for her extensive contributions to preserving and promoting Islamic heritage across the state. The well-attended ceremony highlighted her decades of service, dedication and leadership.

Born in Brisbane to one of the pioneering Indian Muslim families connected with the historic Holland Park Mosque, Aunty Janeth’s community work began at a young age. She was an active participant in the Ladies Auxiliary Committee, supporting mosque activities, festivals and community welfare initiatives.

She later founded the Queensland Muslim Welfare Association Inc., which has become known for its support to migrants, refugees and disadvantaged families of all backgrounds. Among her notable achievements is establishing Australia’s first Muslim welfare second-hand shop, providing essential items to those in need.

Her contributions extend to the Muslim Charitable Foundation, the Queensland Muslim Historical Society Inc., and various multicultural and interfaith forums. Over the years, she has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Medal of the Order of Australia and the Multicultural Citizen of the Year Award.

Her recognition this week celebrates a lifetime dedicated to service, compassion and community building.
