Brisbane, February 27 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)
Brisbane and the Gold Coast have joined forces to strengthen their presence in the Indian market, appointing an in-market representative and intensifying efforts to secure a future nonstop air link between India and Queensland.
In a coordinated move, the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), Brisbane Airport and Experience Gold Coast have engaged Horus Development and Consulting to represent both destinations in India. As reported by The Australia Today, the focus will be on trade outreach, marketing and airline engagement to promote South-East Queensland as a combined tourism and business destination.
Recent data cited by The Australia Today shows India is among Australia’s top five inbound markets. In the year to September 2025, Queensland recorded about 77,000 Indian visitors contributing nearly USD 238.9 million to the economy. Brisbane welcomed around 46,000 travellers, while the Gold Coast saw strong growth, reaching about 25,000 arrivals.
According to The Australian Financial Review, Brisbane Airport has been exploring opportunities for a direct India service, pointing to rising passenger demand, education links and growing business ties. The Courier-Mail reported that civic leaders from both cities are presenting a united regional case to airlines assessing route viability.
Global trends also support the push. The Guardian Australia has noted India’s rapid outbound travel growth, while SBS News highlighted the steady demand generated by students and skilled migrants. Local operators, cited by News.com.au, believe direct flights would boost tourism, business activity and employment.
Though no carrier has confirmed a route, stakeholders say discussions are ongoing. By aligning their strategy and strengthening engagement in India, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are positioning Queensland to capitalise on one of the world’s fastest-growing travel markets.
