Torrent Group’s Rs 43,000 Cr Madhya Pradesh investment to create over 15,000 jobs

Bhopal, Aug 13 (IANS) A private group is investing more than Rs 43,000 crore in Madhya Pradesh across energy and other projects, with the investments expected to create more than 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav said after meeting the group’s chairman in Ahmedabad.

The Chief Minister met Torrent Group and Torrent Power chairman Samir Mehta in Ahmedabad and the investment includes a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Anuppur, estimated to cost around Rs 22,000 crore and expected to generate about 7,000 direct and indirect jobs.

CM Yadav said the investments would help meet Madhya Pradesh’s growing electricity requirements and strengthen its long-term power supply and baseload capacity.

A Power Purchase Agreement for the Anuppur project was signed with Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Ltd on January 27, 2026. Land acquisition has been completed, while work has been awarded to L&T and Tata Projects.

Following approval from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, pre-construction activities are underway at the site.

The Torrent Group is also developing the 1,500 MW Patalkot Pumped Storage Project in Chhindwara, involving a proposed investment of Rs 7,500 crore and around 4,000 jobs.

A 250 MW wind energy project is under development in Ratlam and Ujjain, involving Rs 2,000 crore of investment and about 500 jobs. The group already operates a 36 MW wind power unit in Mandsaur.

Another 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project is also being developed by the group. The project involves an estimated investment of Rs 11,000 crore and is expected to provide around 3,500 employment opportunities.

The state is also preparing to procure 2,800 MW of thermal power through a DBFOO — Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate — tender process.

The Central Electricity Authority has assessed an additional thermal power requirement of about 1,900 MW for Madhya Pradesh by 2036-37, based on the state’s projected demand. Yadav invited Torrent Power to participate in the proposed procurement process.

The group’s presence in Madhya Pradesh extends beyond the energy sector. It operates a US Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmaceutical manufacturing unit at Pithampur in Dhar district.

The facility, established with an investment of Rs 300 crore, currently employs more than 400 people. Torrent Power, the group’s energy company, has an installed generation capacity of around 5.1 GW and is working towards developing 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Its investments include solar, wind, hybrid, battery storage and pumped storage projects. Yadav held the meeting with Mehta in Ahmedabad on Wednesday to discuss the group’s ongoing and proposed investments in Madhya Pradesh.

Additional Chief Secretary, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Neeraj Mandloi, Secretary John Kinsley and MPIDC Managing Director Chandramauli Shukla were also present.
