The 164th birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was recently celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Indian High Commission in Canberra, in partnership with the Bengali Cultural Association of Canberra. The commemoration featured thoughtful reflections by Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay and distinguished Australian academic Dr. John Hood, who spoke on Tagore’s vast contributions to literature, music, education, and philosophy. Both speakers highlighted his vision of universal harmony and cultural exchange.
The evening came alive with vibrant performances by members of the Indian-origin Bengali community in Canberra. Through soulful songs, poetry, and dance in Bangla, performers paid tribute to Tagore’s enduring legacy and celebrated the richness of Indian civilisation.
The event underscored the continued relevance of Tagore’s ideals in today’s world and further strengthened cultural ties between the Indian and Australian communities.
