Very heavy rain forecast for seven TN districts today

Chennai, Oct 20 (IANS) Seven districts in Tamil Nadu are likely to receive very heavy rain on Tuesday, while Chennai and several other parts of the state can expect heavy showers, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai.

The weather department attributed the conditions to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast. A trough extending from this circulation towards the northwest Bay of Bengal is also influencing the weather across the region.

Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Villupuram are expected to receive very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour may accompany the showers, the department said.

The forecast places several districts in the Cauvery delta and along the coast within the belt of intense rainfall. Heavy showers are also expected across a wider stretch of northern, central and southern Tamil Nadu during the day.

Apart from Chennai, the districts likely to receive heavy rain include Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupattur. Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram are also covered by the heavy rainfall forecast for Tuesday.

For Chennai, the weather centre has predicted heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at one or two locations on Tuesday evening. The city forecast indicates that the more intense spells may be localised.

The focus of very heavy rainfall is expected to shift towards southern Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts are likely to experience very heavy showers, according to the department’s outlook for the following day.

Heavy rainfall is also forecast on Wednesday in Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai. Madurai, Dindigul, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram are among the other districts expected to receive heavy showers.

The two-day outlook indicates that rain will remain widespread, although the districts facing the most intense spells are expected to change between Tuesday and Wednesday. Delta districts feature prominently in Tuesday’s very heavy rainfall forecast, while southern districts dominate the corresponding warning for Wednesday.

The department’s forecast distinguishes between very heavy rainfall in seven districts on Tuesday and heavy rainfall across the additional districts listed.

In Chennai, the specific evening outlook is for thunderstorms with heavy showers in isolated locations, rather than uniformly intense rain across the entire city throughout the day.
