CANBERRA, June 10 / INDIAN ABROAD NEWSDESK

The High Commission of India in Canberra, in association with BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, organised a community Yoga session as a curtain-raiser to the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026.

The event brought together members of the Indian diaspora and the wider community, who participated enthusiastically in a series of yoga practices aimed at promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and inner balance.

Held in a spirit of unity and wellness, the session highlighted yoga’s growing appeal as a holistic approach to health and its ability to bring people from diverse backgrounds together.

Participants engaged in various yoga postures and breathing exercises under expert guidance, reflecting the timeless relevance of the ancient Indian discipline in modern life.

Organisers said the event formed part of the lead-up activities to the International Day of Yoga, celebrated annually on June 21 across the world. The observance, first adopted by the United Nations in 2014 following an initiative by India, has grown into a global movement promoting healthy lifestyles and mindfulness.

The Canberra event underscored the transformative role of yoga in fostering health, well-being and harmony while strengthening cultural connections within the community.

The High Commission of India has planned a series of activities in the lead-up to International Day of Yoga 2026, with community organisations and yoga enthusiasts expected to participate in celebrations across Australia.
