Officials from ISTRAC called on India’s Consul General in Perth, Kajari Biswas, during their visit en route to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, highlighting the growing momentum in India–Australia collaboration in the space sector.
The discussions focused on the progress of India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission and ongoing joint efforts between Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Australian Space Agency. The engagement underscored the strategic importance of bilateral cooperation in advancing civil space activities and technological partnerships.
Officials noted that Australia and India have steadily expanded cooperation in recent years, particularly following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2021 aimed at enhancing collaboration across space research and operations. The partnership has since evolved into a key pillar of the broader Australia-India strategic relationship.
A significant aspect of this cooperation is India’s preparation for the Gaganyaan mission, which is set to mark the country’s maiden human spaceflight. With this mission, India is expected to join an elite group of nations with independent human spaceflight capability, alongside the United States, Russia, and China.
As part of mission support infrastructure, ISRO has deployed a transportable telemetry, tracking and command (TTC) antenna at the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in Australia. The facility will play a crucial role in monitoring and supporting the Gaganyaan mission, reflecting the operational depth of Australia-India cooperation.
The visit of ISTRAC officials to Perth and onward to the Cocos Islands is seen as a key step in strengthening coordination ahead of upcoming mission milestones. It also signals the increasing role of Australia as a strategic partner in India’s expanding space ambitions.
Officials emphasised that such engagements not only enhance technical collaboration but also reinforce the shared commitment of both nations to peaceful and cooperative use of outer space.
