The Consulate General of India in Perth, in partnership with the National Indian Film Festival of Australia, hosted a vibrant celebration of Indian cinema, bringing together artists, community members, and cultural leaders at the Perth Indian Film Festival held from April 16 to 19.
The festival, organised across venues, including Reading Cinemas Belmont and the WA State Library, showcased a diverse lineup of films representing India’s rich linguistic and cultural landscape. Audiences were treated to stories spanning multiple regional languages, reflecting the depth and diversity of Indian storytelling traditions.
The event highlighted the growing cultural engagement between India and Australia, using cinema as a platform to foster dialogue and shared experiences among communities.
A key highlight of the festival was a panel discussion titled “From Fearless Nadia to Bidjara Kumari – Western Australian Stories with Indian Cinema,” which explored the intersection of Indian cinema with Western Australian narratives.
India’s Consul General in Perth, Kajari Biswas, participated in the discussion alongside prominent figures from the film and cultural sectors. The panel featured award-winning actress Mona Singh, Rajji Shinde, filmmaker and festival director Anupam Sharma, who also moderated the session, and Dr Parwinder Kaur.
Speakers reflected on the evolving role of cinema in bridging cultures and amplifying diverse voices, particularly in multicultural societies like Australia.
The festival is part of ongoing efforts by the Consulate to strengthen cultural ties and promote greater understanding between Australia and India through creative and community-driven initiatives.
