Kolkata, June 17 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday directed the Diamond Harbour Police district to take strong action under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those who attempted to storm Falta Police Station, including Regina Bibi, wife of arrested Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan.
The incident occurred when a group of Trinamool activists, led by Regina Bibi, tried to storm the police station in an attempt to free Khan, the party’s candidate from Falta in the recently concluded assembly elections.
Khan was once considered the “terror and the final word” in Falta. Their attempt was thwarted by state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
Eight persons have already been arrested in connection with the incident, though Regina Bibi remains at large.
Addressing a public meeting at Falta, CM Adhikari said all those seen in the video attacking security personnel would face severe consequences.
“On Tuesday, I was in Kurseong. But I saw on television how a group of people, led by a local mafia’s wife, tried to storm the Falta police station and attack the security personnel. Let me remind you that the rule of law has been established in Falta. No matter how big a mafia is, the current state government will teach them a lesson,” he said.
He added that he had directed the district police superintendent to book those involved under the stringent provisions of the BNS.
“We will not just put them behind bars, but also confiscate their properties and thereafter put them on auction. We will have a zero-tolerance attitude in the matter, since establishing the rule of law is our prime goal,” Adhikari asserted.
