Bengal: MSc student’s body recovered from Agricultural University hostel, suicide suspected

Kolkata, Aug 20 (IANS) The body of a first‑year Master of Science (MSc) student was recovered from the hostel of Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (North Bengal Agricultural University) in the Pundibari area of Cooch Behar district on Thursday.

The deceased student has been identified as Trisha Saha (22), a resident of Shibmandir, Siliguri, in North Bengal.

According to university sources, on Thursday morning her classmates called out to Trisha because her room door had remained closed for a long time. When there was no response, they reported the matter to the university authorities and the hostel in‑charge.

The Pundibari police station was also informed. In the presence of the university authorities, police broke the door and entered the hostel room, where Trisha’s hanging body was found.

Police recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. Although it is initially believed to be a case of suicide, the reason remains unclear. Trisha’s maternal uncle, Parthapratim Saha, said they received a call from the university in the morning informing them about the incident. “We are still unable to understand how and why this happened,” he said.

North Bengal Agricultural University Registrar Abhas Kumar Sinha said Trisha lived in a single room in the hostel.

“In the morning, her classmates called her many times but did not get any response. The police broke down the door and found her hanging,” he said.

The initial opinion of investigators is that it is not possible to say anything with certainty about the actual cause of death until the autopsy report arrives. Whether the incident was suicide or there is some other reason behind it, all possibilities are being investigated.

Authorities are also examining the situation in the hostel room, the student’s recent movements, and whether anyone had contact with her.

According to university sources, the student was staying in the international hostel. Apart from her studies, officials are also collecting information about her daily life in the hostel and whether any problems have arisen recently.
