The Consul General, Kajari Biswas, joined members of the Bengali community in Perth for the celebration of Rabindra and Nazrul Jayanti, an annual event organised by the Bengali Association of Western Australia to honour two of the most influential figures in Bengali literature and culture.
The programme paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, whose literary, musical and philosophical contributions continue to inspire people across generations and national boundaries.
Community members gathered to commemorate the birth anniversaries of the two cultural icons through performances and reflections on their remarkable achievements and lasting impact on society.
The Consul General praised the Bengali Association of Western Australia for preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Bengal while strengthening community bonds in multicultural Australia.
Tagore, the first Asian Nobel laureate in Literature, is celebrated worldwide for his poetry, songs, novels and humanist ideals, while Nazrul is remembered as the “Rebel Poet” whose writings championed justice, equality and freedom.
Organisers highlighted how the Bengali language has enriched global culture through the works of extraordinary writers, thinkers and artists, with Tagore and Nazrul occupying a special place among them.
The event served as a reminder of the universal values reflected in their writings, including compassion, harmony, human dignity and cultural inclusiveness.
Participants also celebrated the continuing relevance of their works in contemporary society, where their messages of unity and humanity continue to resonate across communities and cultures.
