Members of the Queensland parliament joined representatives of the Consulate General of India in Brisbane at Queensland Parliament House on June 2 for a curtain-raiser event marking the lead-up to the 12th International Day of Yoga, which will be observed worldwide on June 21.
Organised by the Consulate General of India, the event brought together parliamentarians and community representatives to highlight the significance of yoga as a holistic approach to health, wellbeing and healthy living.
This year’s International Day of Yoga is being celebrated under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, drawing attention to the role yoga can play in promoting physical vitality, mental wellness and quality of life across all age groups.
The gathering underscored the growing global recognition of yoga as a practice that supports mobility, balance, flexibility and overall wellbeing. Speakers noted that yoga’s benefits extend beyond physical fitness, contributing to mental resilience, stress management and healthier lifestyles.
The curtain-raiser also served as an opportunity to encourage wider participation in the various International Day of Yoga activities planned across Queensland and Australia in the lead-up to the global observance.
Since the United Nations adopted June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 following India’s proposal, the annual celebration has evolved into a worldwide movement promoting wellness, mindfulness and preventive health.
Organisers said the 2026 theme reflects increasing international attention on healthy ageing and the importance of adopting lifestyle practices that support long-term physical and mental wellbeing.
Advocates of yoga point to growing evidence that regular practice can contribute to improved flexibility, strength and stress reduction, while health professionals generally recommend yoga as part of a broader approach to healthy living that includes exercise, balanced nutrition and appropriate medical care.
The Queensland Parliament House event marked the beginning of local celebrations leading up to International Day of Yoga 2026, with community yoga sessions and public events expected to take place throughout the month.
The occasion also highlighted the continuing popularity of yoga in Australia, where people from diverse cultural backgrounds have embraced the ancient Indian practice as a pathway to healthier and more balanced lives.
