Sydney curtain-raiser launches Yoga Day celebrations across two states

SYDNEY, June 9 / INDIAN ABROAD NEWSDESK

The Consulate General of India (CGI) in Sydney and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) hosted a vibrant curtain-raiser event for the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, bringing together community members and yoga enthusiasts ahead of the global observance on June 21.

The event featured the unveiling of this year’s International Day of Yoga programme by Consul General Dr. S. Janakiraman, who outlined a series of activities planned across New South Wales and South Australia to mark the annual celebration.

Dr. Janakiraman also led participants through the Common Yoga Protocol, introducing attendees to a set of standardised yoga practices that form the foundation of International Day of Yoga events around the world.

The gathering highlighted the growing popularity of yoga as a holistic approach to physical health, mental wellbeing and balanced living, while encouraging broader community participation in upcoming programmes.

Organisers announced that the Consulate and SVCC are partnering with a range of community and wellness organisations to deliver yoga events across both states in the lead-up to June 21.

Among the participating organisations are SRMD, The Art of Living, Brahma Kumaris Australia, Dhamma Yoga, the Indian Australian Association of South Australia (IAASA), Yoga Tribe, Heartfulness Australia, Southern Cross University and Sri Om Care.

The collaborative approach reflects the widespread community support for International Day of Yoga and the increasing engagement of multicultural organisations in promoting wellness initiatives.

This year’s International Day of Yoga is being observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasising the role of yoga in maintaining physical vitality, mental resilience and overall wellbeing throughout life.

Organisers said the programme of events will offer opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience yoga through community sessions, demonstrations and guided practices.

The curtain-raiser marked the official beginning of celebrations in New South Wales and South Australia, setting the stage for a diverse range of activities aimed at promoting health, harmony and community spirit through the timeless practice of yoga.
