TVK govt to present maiden Tamil Nadu budget on August 5

Chennai, July 21 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government will present its first full financial road map since the change of regime when Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson tables the revised Budget for the 2026-27 financial year in the State Assembly on August 5.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar. According to the Speaker, the Budget will be presented at 10 a.m. on August 5, while the Agriculture Budget will be introduced a day later, on August 6, by Agriculture Minister Vinoth.

The revised Budget assumes significance as it will be the maiden Budget of the TVK government after it assumed office earlier this year.

The Budget is expected to set out the government’s fiscal priorities, expenditure plans and policy initiatives for the remaining months of the current financial year. It is also likely to indicate how the new administration plans to address the financial challenges highlighted soon after it came to power.

The previous DMK government had presented an interim Budget for 2026-27 before the Assembly elections. In that Budget, revenue receipts were estimated at Rs 3.44 lakh crore, while revenue expenditure was pegged at Rs 3.93 lakh crore, resulting in a projected revenue deficit of Rs 48,697 crore.

The fiscal deficit was estimated at Rs 1.22 lakh crore. However, after assuming office, the TVK government released a White Paper on the State’s finances, painting a far more challenging fiscal picture.

The document stated that Tamil Nadu’s total outstanding debt had risen to Rs 13.18 lakh crore and warned that the State’s finances were under considerable strain.

According to the White Paper, the revenue deficit projected in the interim Budget could widen sharply to around Rs 90,500 crore, while the fiscal deficit could increase to nearly Rs 1.64 lakh crore.

The report also noted that the State’s maximum borrowing capacity was estimated at Rs 1.52 lakh crore, potentially leaving a financing gap of about Rs 11,600 crore.

Against this backdrop, the revised Budget is expected to provide clarity on the government’s strategy to bridge the fiscal gap while sustaining welfare commitments, funding infrastructure and development projects, and maintaining capital expenditure.

It will also be closely watched for new taxation measures, resource mobilisation plans and sector-specific allocations that could shape Tamil Nadu’s economic and development agenda for the rest of the financial year.
