The 12th International Day of Yoga was marked with a strong community turnout at Old Parliament House in Canberra, where people from diverse backgrounds gathered to celebrate the ancient Indian practice and its contribution to physical and mental wellbeing.
According to the High Commission of India in Canberra, the event featured a one-hour yoga session led by Yoga Australia Chief Executive Officer Josh Pryor, who guided participants through practices promoting mindfulness, relaxation and holistic health. The High Commission said the gathering reflected the growing popularity of yoga in Australia and its ability to bring communities together through a shared commitment to healthy living.
The International Day of Yoga, observed annually on June 21, was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2014 following a proposal by India and is now celebrated in countries across the world to promote the benefits of yoga for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
According to Yoga Australia, yoga continues to gain recognition across the country as an accessible practice that supports healthier lifestyles, stress management and overall wellness for people of all ages.
The High Commission said the enthusiastic participation at the Canberra event highlighted the enduring appeal of yoga as an integral part of India’s cultural heritage and a universal practice that fosters harmony, balance and inner peace.
